coping, you are not alone

Edie Mannion, Director

Edie Mannion is the co-founder and director of the Training, Education and Consultation (TEC) Family Center, a program of the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

TEC provides training and support for family members of people with mental illness, as well as training for mental health professionals. The program follows the philosophy that without the proper support, knowledge and skills, family members and mental health professionals are less likely to be able to help their relatives or clients who have a mental illness, and are more likely to burn out and develop their own stress-related symptoms.

Mannion has expanded the program to offer the Child and Adolescent Coping Skills Project, offering support, knowledge and coping skills to children and adolescents growing up with mental illness in their families through workshops and this Web site.

A pioneer in a variety of family education interventions in severe mental illness, Mannion has worked to offer emotional support, information, coping skills workshops and consultation services to families of adults with mental illness. Also, she boasts a successful track record in urban mental health facility staff training and teaching of family members in coping with severe mental illness.

In 1985, partly because of her own experience in coping with her father's mental illness and partly because of her goal to respond to the lack of support and education provided to families affected by mental illness and/or substance abuse in their families, Mannion dedicated her life to helping families coping with a loved one's mental illness and co-founded the TEC Family Center.

Mannion, who has a master's degree in Family Therapy from Hahnemann University, provides case management services and works as a clinician in individual, family and group therapy. She has either authored or co-authored eleven mental health journal articles and three teaching manuals and has presented at a variety of mental health conferences and workshops.
